The Challenge

Manufacturing expertise held in a complex workbook

A manufacturing organization relied on a detailed spreadsheet to calculate work-center rates and plant costs. The model combined labor schedules, machine capacity, equipment depreciation, utilities, and shared overhead across thousands of linked formulas. Understanding a single rate meant understanding the assumptions and allocations behind it.

The use case was to make that expertise accessible through conversation: explain a rate, inspect its cost drivers, and explore a change in operating conditions. Answers needed to preserve the workbook's calculation rules and show their source, while keeping scenarios separate from saved inputs and leaving business decisions with the specialists.

HumBot Solution

Put the cost model within reach of a conversation

AI Integration & Manufacturing Cost Engineering

HumBot connected the reviewed workbook model to a dedicated calculation service through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The AI retrieves calculated rates, component breakdowns, and scenario results, with access to the underlying source evidence. The service preserves the existing formulas, tracks revisions, and validates supported input changes. The original workbook remains unchanged.

Architecture

From workbook formulas to explainable answers

Expert Cost Model

The existing workbook provides the formulas, operating assumptions, and allocation rules. Its source version is preserved and its exceptions remain visible.

Calculation Engine

A dedicated engine recalculates the reviewed formula model for work-center rates and plant totals, preserving the workbook's cost and hour definitions.

Connected AI Workspace

An MCP connection lets HumBot retrieve rates, explain cost components, and request scenarios in conversation. Numerical results come from the calculation engine.

Traceable Results

Calculation records connect outputs to source inputs, formula dependencies, and a saved revision, giving specialists evidence to inspect during review.

Capabilities

Ask, inspect, and explore the cost of production

Explain a Work-Center Rate

Retrieve hourly and annual costs, with and without direct labor, and inspect the components behind each work-center rate.

Explore Cost Drivers

Break down labor, equipment and tooling depreciation, utilities, occupancy, shared assets, and allocated overhead using the existing cost model.

Compare What-If Scenarios

Explore changes to wages, energy prices, shifts, or other supported inputs. Compare the recalculated rate with its baseline while keeping saved inputs unchanged.

Inspect the Whole Plant

Read plant totals, overhead categories, and shared-asset costs alongside individual work centers to understand how allocations affect the wider operation.

Manage Draft Inputs

Supported edits validate inputs and recalculate every active center before saving. Revision checks prevent an older draft from overwriting newer changes.

Keep Review Context

Saved history retains input changes, supplied reasons, and earlier calculation records. Later edits return reviewed data to draft for further assessment.

Workflow

A cost question with a clear path to its evidence

  1. 1

    Ask a Cost Question

Ask for a work-center rate, its cost breakdown, or the effect of a change to a supported input.

  2. 2

    Check the Source

HumBot retrieves the model identity and current revision so the answer has a clear calculation basis.

  3. 3

    Calculate and Compare

The engine applies the workbook formulas and returns the result. Temporary scenarios show the baseline, changed rate, and difference.

  4. 4

    Review the Evidence

Inspect components, assumptions, and source exceptions. Cost previews remain subject to business review before use in a customer quote.

Results

Verified coverage of the existing cost model

34

Active Work Centers

All populated work centers covered by the workbook-compatible calculation model.

17

Cost Components per Center

Annual and hourly component values available for explaining each rate.

9,509

Formula Results Checked

Baseline results matched the saved workbook within documented numerical tolerances.

52

Changed-Input Scenarios

Regression scenarios passed across plant assumptions and individual work-center inputs.

Live HumBot sessions verified selected work-center rates, plant summary metrics, a complete rate-component breakdown, and a wage scenario. Formula checks establish compatibility with the reviewed workbook within the tested scope; accounting assumptions and customer quotes still require business review.

Business Impact

Make specialist knowledge easier to use and review

Expertise Available in Conversation

Teams can ask about the cost model through HumBot and retrieve the underlying figures, making specialist workbook knowledge easier to access.

Repeatable Cost Analysis

Rate lookups and scenario comparisons use the same formula model, with a recorded source and revision that specialists can revisit.

Evidence for Human Decisions

Component breakdowns and visible assumptions support cost reviews. Specialists retain responsibility for accounting policy, corrections, and commercial decisions.
